The beauties of football which included entertainment, sportsmanship and unity among others were on full display on Saturday as the grand finale of the 2025 edition of the Olasoju Adebayo football tournament tagged ‘Chairman’s Cup’ was played.
With close to two thousand spectators gathering at the mini stadium in LSDPC Estate, Ile-Iwe Metta for the closing ceremony grand finale, the match between Lucky Boy FC and Lifestyle FC delivered a pulsating and entertaining event that was similar to what’s obtainable in an European UEFA Champions League final.
With the Executive Chairman, Olasoju Adebayo doing the match kick off at around 4:57 pm, the match got underway at exactly 5pm. The first ten minutes saw Lifestyle FC in their yellow jersey dominating only to concede 4 first half goals to a more technical Lucky Boy FC side. Braces from Olanrewaju Eniola and Ayinde Idris drew a line between the two sides just midway into the match as Lucky Boy FC fans sang and danced endlessly leaving the golden trophy and cash prize predictably beyond the reach of Lifestyle FC.
Although Lifestyle FC tried to stage a comeback in the second half by pulling one back by their forward, Adebayo Ade, but the beautifully converted free-kick turned out to be a mere consolation just as Lucky Boy FC, once again, asserted their influence by scoring a fifth goal courtesy of an individual brilliance from Okeyinka Opeyemi.
With the referee, Olaniyi Toheeb blowing the final whistle at around 6:45pm, fans of the luckiest club of the day - Lucky Boy FC took over the field in jubilation of their team’s triumph to rejoice with the players and club officials.
In his remarks after the match, Olasoju declared every team that participated in the competition as winners hailing their sportsmanship and show of professionalism. He commended the match officials and supporters of the teams for comporting themselves in a dignifying manner throughout the competition regardless of the outcome of each match. Having decorated the first runners up and the eventual winner with their medals, he announced a sum of N1,000,000 prize and a complementary N200,000 from the CEO of Carabana Lounge, Chief Promise Nwobu to Lucky Boy FC before handing the trophy to the side\'s captain.
Other players who went home with individual awards included Kaka of Lifestyle FC who was declared the ‘Most Valuable Player’, the ‘Best Keeper’ prize went the way of Lucky Boy FC’s goalie, Tijani Mohammed a.k.a Hilario while Odogwu of Eya FC clinched the ‘Highest Goal Scorer’ award with 6 goals.
AK Lee FC’s Chukwubueka was announced as the ‘Most Consistent Player’ of the tournament while Ibrahim Adeleye and Abubakar Mikhail of Lucky Boy FC, were declared as the ‘Best Defender’ and ‘Best Coach’ of the tournament, respectively.
While assuring that the next edition will be better, Olasoju promised to further discussion with relevant state authorities to see to the upgrade of the sporting center to modernize it and make it world-class.
Earlier before the historic match got underway, a one minute silence was held in honour of one of the participating teams’ coach, Mr. Fatiu Balogun (Elewe), who passed on a week earlier. Also, just after the final whistle, the spectators joined the council chairman in rendering a birthday song to one of the brains behind the tournament, Mr. Fuad Akintunde ‘Ate Money’ who was celebrating his birthday.
Other dignitaries who joined Olasoju at the grand finale included his counterpart from Oriade LCDA, Hon. Rasaq Akorede Olojede, Chief Executive officer of Carabana Lounge, Chief Promise Nwobu, councilors representing Alagbeji, Ajao Estate, Okota and Ilasamaja Wards, Hon. Akeem Azeez, Hon. Adeolu Ikugbayigbe, Hon. Jamiu Ajose and Honorable Nofisat Shobayo-Lawal, respectively. Others included Hon. Musbau Quadri, Hon. Olamide Taiwo, Hon. Abiola Ibrahim Ayinde-Marshal
